6 Months.

Wow... 6 months already?!

It's one of those things when you're in the middle of it, it feels like forever.

But then you look back and wonder how the time went so fast.

Man. This has been an adventure.

Not one of my choosing, of course.

But, none the less, quite the adventure.

If you are in the dark as to what I'm talking about, today, April 7, 2016, marks 6 months ago that my mama passed away.

Thank you Lord for providing the ULTIMATE palace in Heaven for all of us sinners to come to for rest when our time here on Earth is done. You are such a gracious and merciful God to allow us to be freed from our sins. We are completely full of sin and selfish, yet you care for us SO deeply, that all You ask is that we declare you as our one and only God.

So, Lord, I give my life to You. Every single day. You are the almighty one. The only one who can wash my sins away and make me white as snow once more. I believe that Jesus was sent here on Earth to save us from our sinful ways. And I know that he has saved us by sacrificing himself in the most painful way possible.

You are the way, the truth and the life.

One sweet day, mama, I will see you again. In heaven. It's not my time yet, but one day, I'll be there with my husband, our puppy, our children, and our children's children.

I'm so sad that I can't have you here on Earth to experience life with you. But I know that you have not left me. I feel you every single day. I see the signs you give me to know that you're here. I pray with you every night before bed.

I'm elated that you don't have to be in ANY pain ever again. Thank you Lord for that.

I love you so much mama. More than you will ever know. There will always be a spot in my heart for my mama that no one can ever replace.

The pain of you being gone has not gone away. I just have to learn how to deal with it.

You are an incredible mother, and the best one there will ever be. So I can only hope to be half as amazing as you are.

I know you're dancing around in heaven to some salsa music, or the Beatles, or Patsy Cline.  {And you've probably already had everyone over to your house for a BBQ/party} And for that, I am so grateful.

I miss you every single day.

I love you mama. Always.

Let's Talk: Moms!

If y'all know ANYTHING about me, then you know that my mama is my best friend, and one of THE most important people in my life.

So...

Let's Talk: Moms

My mama was amazing! Here's a couple of facts about her so that you can 'get to know her' a little bit better.

-She was an RN for 40 years!

-Her kids {and grandkids} trumped anything else in life.

-She had a dry sense of humor, but it could get you rolling for hours!

- She was well known for making soup out of anything we had left in the fridge {and no joke. It turned out amazing, but different every single time}.

-She loved to have parties and entertain at our house for any given reason.

- She LOVED the Lord, and I thank God every day that she decided to give her life up to Him, even though she was in her mid 50s!

- Her favorite foods were eggs. And wine. And cereal {at 10 pm}.

-Her favorite places to shop were Costco and Ross {and yes, that's exactly where I get it from!}

-She could make anyone feel like the most special person in the entire world.

So, now that you know more about my sweet mama, let me tell you about some of my most favorite memories with her!

-She put a full size trampoline in our living room for Christmas one year.

- We went to the pool every day after school to swim and play, and then we'd come home and have a fresh bowl of spaghetti.

- We would make enchiladas together whenever we had a hankering for Mexican food.

- She came out to Hawai'i to spend a week with me, and we had the time of our lives going to the lagoons, swimming in a waterfall, and so much else.

- I would come to her office every day to have lunch with her, or to go shopping with her after work.

-While at chemo, we would do manis and pedis!

My mama was one of my most favorite people. EVER. She still is.

Sadly, my mama passed away on October 7, 2015. Not even 6 months ago. And the pain is still so fresh. If you'd like to read more about dealing with grief, you can do so here

I will ALWAYS think about her every single day. And I cannot wait to see her and squeeze her again. Although, I have to say, I pray with her every single day. And it helps so much.

This song is now the song that makes me think of my mama.

As for my journey into motherhood, it's not here quite yet!

But when it is, I know that mama will be looking down and loving on the sweet new baby that will join our family.

And even though I wish she would be there to hold my babies, I am SO eternally grateful to Jesus for sacrificing himself on the cross so that MY mama can be in Heaven without any pain forever.

Mothers are the absolute greatest. So I cannot wait to hear about your mom, or your journey to motherhood!

Friday Favorites!

So y'all, this will be going up on Thursday instead of Friday, because Friday is New Years!

I hope you wonderful ladies have had a year for the books! I sure have had an....

eventful year. To say the least! Here are my favorites from the ENTIRE year!

See y'all next year! ;)

Friday Favorites

ONE

My all time favorite of this year was spending some last few sweet moments with my all time favorite person. My mama.

She was the star of the show (but she never begged to be). Everyone was just drawn to my mama with her radiating love for Christ, her children, and her desire to bring everyone together with food.

My mama was a STRONG follower of Christ. She came to be a disciple through...

Me.

How cool is that? I had no idea what I was doing at the time. I was only about 9 years old. We were raised Jewish (against my mother's wishes, but she did not have a true 'religion' to follow). On our way home everyday, we would pass by this huge building with the "3 T's" on top. I was young, and not raised Christian, so I didn't know that was a church!

One day I asked my mama from the back seat of the car. "Hey mama, can we go to the building with the 3 T's?" She said, "That's a church, baby. But of course. We can try it out".

I later became involved with volunteering in the nursery with my mama, which was such a fun time for us to have together.  I then went on to become super involved with the youth group, and even became a part of the worship team. My mama saw how I was changing, and decided she wanted in too.

About a year later, she was baptized in front of my eyes. One of the most beautiful moments I've ever seen. Why?

Because my mama was SAVED! And now I have the peace of knowing that she is in Heaven, living without any pain, and hanging out with Jesus ALL DAY LONG. There is nothing that can even come close to that relief, ladies. I pray that you all know Jesus. And if you don't, please let me help show you what it's like to be unconditionally loved :)

As for the rest of what my mama was all about, she LOVED her children more than anything in the world. She would do anything for any of us. And she had this amazing way of making us all feel so special. None of us ever felt left out, or second to another. She was truly meant to be a mother. What a special gift. I am so lucky God chose me to be one of her four children. What an honor. I got so lucky!!

If you don't know already, my mama was also an amazing cook! But she never had a recipe. She just threw things together that were in the fridge and had people begging for her secrets! One of the best things is that she always made enough to give to other people, and feed all of our friends who would come home over lunch (during high school). My mama was all about making soup, eggs, enchiladas, and she was always drinking a glass of red wine. She was just the greatest!

I will FOREVER treasure my mama. I urge you to call your mama or go give her a hug, if you have the opportunity :)

TWO

I have some favorite recipes from this year!

Take a look at these bad boys :) (they're actually really good!)

Mama's Enchiladas! (scroll to #3)

All 3 of these recipes are constantly on rotation for our meal plans! They're great for everyone! Picky eaters, kiddos, mamas in a hurry. Anyone can make these simple recipes. And I so encourage you to do so :)

THREE

Starting this blog has been a HUGE favorite for me! Not only has is been something to fill my days with, it has given me an opportunity to connect with this AWESOME community! I thank God for this blog everyday!

It took me a little bit of courage to start this. I was worried what people would think of me, worried that people wouldn't read, or that they would hate my content, or that no one would care what I had to say.

But then I had to look at myself. And I said, Rachel, does it honestly matter? Do this for YOU

I have since learned to do more small things throughout the day just for me! Wow. What a difference it makes! It makes you feel important.

This blog has given me courage, and an amazing outlet to get all my thoughts out.

Can't wait to ring in this new year with you ladies! Big things are coming :)

FOUR

Something that I totally encourage you guys to try is being positive.

Sounds simple right?

Well my personality is super sarcastic sometimes. I find it gets some laughs sometimes, but it also was making me look at things really negatively.

Only until I changed my thoughts in my head did my days really start to turn around for the better.

Here's what I think you should try.

Every time you think about something (and it can be anything), try to only say positive things about it. Don't even think about the negative things. If negative things start to arise in your thoughts, look at 3 positive things you can find.

It actually becomes SUPER easy, and it really changes your demeanor. I have found that people want to be around me a lot more, and I am loving myself more each day, which I think is imperative to your overall health!

One of my favorite things about thinking positive is what comes with it. Look how true this is!

Every time you start to think negatively, just think about this again! You will see changes so quickly!

Think about every person you've ever met. And how true this really is!

Soon enough, you'll be radiating Christ's love. And that is exactly what we are called to do :)

FIVE

My man is one of my all times favorites (forever!)

I cannot tell you how faithful my man has been.

He has rejoiced with me in the exciting times this year, and carried me through the extremely low valleys.

What more could I ask for?!

He continues to surprise me every day! I wake up each morning more in love with him than the day before.

As Brad Paisley would say, "And I thought I loved you then".

Look up the song "Then" by Brad Paisley.

You'll realize how true this is, especially if you are lucky enough to spend every. single. day. with your soulmate.

This man inspires me to be a better version of myself, encourages me when I've hit a plateau, and loves me unconditionally.

There is no doubt in my mind that God made this man for me. That is amazing.

If you're interested in how we met, check out this post

SIX

I can't forget our newest addition!

He may be driving me crazy.

And waking up at 3 am.

And chewing on everything in sight.

But we are determined to make it through these hard (but oh so cute) puppy days to see our little guy grow into the most awesome 'man's best friend'!

Here's to you and your loved ones this year!

Any amazing moments you have to share?? I'd love to know! Post in the comments below :)

Show and Tell Tuesday: Best Gift Ever!

Alright y'all, let me just say that I don't know how I am ever going to beat this 'best gift ever' that was given by my mama.

I mean, unless I can duplicate this EXACT gift... I don't think I can hold a candle to it with my kids.

Show and Tell Tuesday
Best Gift Ever

So... it begins. I believe this was around 2007. My younger sister (9) and I (11) were currently stuck half time at our bio father's house (he was abusive and we did not wanna be there). And the other half of the time, we got to be with our mama. Which is exactly where we wanted to be!

My mama was spunky, and fun, and so compassionate. She was all about fun. Not caring about the way it looked to anyone else, just about making memories with her kids (she was all about her kids... since forever!).

My mama was in the middle of fighting this LONG custody battle to get us to live with her full time (which we eventually won about 7 months later! Yay!)

That being said... we had literally NO money.

My older brother had come to live in our basement and help mama pay the bills and take care of all of us. We were in desperate times, about to lose our house and I'm sure we had next to no money for food.

But you know what? She NEVER let us know that.

So.. onto the story.

Christmas Eve, we went to bed in our mama's bed and slept all night.. not hearing anything else!

Christmas morning, we woke up to run and see over the bannister (you could see the living room over the bannister from upstairs, which is where the tree was). We looked over and there were no presents.

We were a little disappointed, but tried not to show it. We turned around to tell our mama that it was okay, we were just happy to be with her that Christmas.

And just as we turned around, we saw the dining room (you could see it from the stairway going upstairs. Think big open floor plan).

A TRAMPOLINE

Yep. You heard me.

A trampoline in the dining room.

My mama felt we needed something fun (we would come home and cry everyday after school because we did not want to leave her), so she had my brother move all of the furniture out of the dining room and build a trampoline.

She always said that if she could just get us home from school without crying, then we would get on the trampoline and not cry the rest of the night.

Everyday was so hard for all of us... Just such a struggle. But my mama was so fun and kind hearted. She just wanted us to be happy. So, we'd get on that trampoline and jump for hours. Every night!

I sadly don't have any pictures of this... but I can remember it so clearly!

A big 16 foot trampoline (with the net around it) in our dining room. It was so big you could hardly open the front door!

We constantly had friends and neighbors over to jump on the fabled 'trampoline in the living room'! I mean, could it have been any more fun?!

It stayed in our dining room for about 6 months. Until it was warm enough to jump outside.

That trampoline was money well spent :)

Just to put a name to the face, that's me and my cute spunky mama. We were doing manis and pedis at chemo :)

I hope you enjoyed hearing this! We made the best memories with that trampoline, and I can remember it like it was yesterday!

Friday Favorites

I have a LOT of favorites this week. And for that, I am so excited!!!

Wait till you hear these! They're so fun. And you may get some ideas to try during this next week!

Friday Favorites!

One

This may sound like a silly favorite, but the post I wrote yesterday (it's a bit of a long one) has seriously improved my heart.

Just being able to get the words out on 'paper' really is helping heal me. Please let me know if you have any questions on it (I will answer them!) or if you are going through a similar situation, let's help each other heal!

Healing is exhausting. But it is so worth it.

So worth it.

If you haven't seen the post, you can find it here

Two

Just along with the whole post thing... I must say, we have some pretty interesting posts that went up this week over here at The Fashionista Housewife :)

Especially because I've started a new series. Called Makeup Mondays!

Makeup Mondays will be about anything and everything makeup! I have some detailed makeup looks coming your way, as well as some tips/tricks and how to's! I mean, come on. Who doesn't love makeup? And if you don't, I promise, you can still find something useful in these posts.

Can't wait to hear what y'all think of these!

Here's the new posts of the week.

I'll link them for you here.

Thursday: Dealing With Grief

Three:

Sweet Cole comes home tomorrow!! And can I express to you how excited I am?!!!

No I cannot :)

He's such a little nugget!

Cole is the smallest of the bunch by 3 pounds (that's a lot in puppy world!)

This pic was taken right after he decided to go swimming in his breakfast food!
He can literally step into the bowl with all four paws and walk around. That's how tiny that little cutie is.

I cannot wait to pick up our baby!

Four

These lipglosses!!! Hello!!!

Gorgeous!

I will be doing an in depth Makeup Monday post on them this coming monday. Keep a look out for that fun post :)

Can I just say obsessed?!

These are from a gift set by Anastasia Beverly Hills. It's 8 full size lip glosses that retail for $16 a piece.
The gift set sells for $40 making each lipgloss only $5! You really can't even beat that!

Just take my word for it. You need these!

You can find these at Macys in the Impulse makeup section, or on her website here.

I'm wearing the shade Weekend Barbie.

Five

My favorite songs for the week! I just love jammin' to these beats. Mainly what gets me to love a song is when the voices harmonize, a catchy beat, and when the artist gets really passionate about the song (about 3/4 of the way through a song).

Check out some of these fun songs :)

1. Forever Like That by Ben Rector
2. Break Up In a Small Town by Sam Hunt
3. Roses by Chainsmokers
4. My House by Flo Rida
5. God Blessed Texas by Little Texas

We used to line dance to that last one in college all the time. I still have my dancin' boots too. Not to toot my own horn or anything...

But I was good ;)

Six

I have some AH-MAZING recipes comin' your way this week!

Are you ready for 'em?

Here's a sneak peek...

... and that's about all I can say. Because otherwise my mouth will start watering, and I won't be able to keep any surprises!

Just check back if you want the BEST dinner to make your family :)

Seven

Okay... Have Y'all been in Bath and Body Works lately?!!!

You must know that yo' girl loves candles.

ESPECIALLY Bath and Body Works candles.

But I have never seen these types... WITH THE ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS SPARKLY LIDS?!!!
This mama likes her some sparkles :)

I mean can these get any cuter?!!

Eight

Just wait. Until you see. This scarf.

I scored. I really did.

I found this full and voluminous cheetah print scarf at Ross.

For $6.99.

And it's Vince Camuto!
#allthehearteyes

I'm showing you below the couple of ways that I like to tie it up.

My jeans in the pic are SO comfy and soft. They are Rock and Revival jeans. Expensive, but worth it. They're stretchy, they're long, they're skinny. Can you get any better? These have already lasted me hundreds of wears throughout 3 years and still look just like new. They wash well too!

My shirt is from the So brand from Kohls from ages ago!

I just tie it in 2 knots. One of top of each other.

Just let it hang. No ties or anything.

The famous wrap around. Just hold the scarf in front of your neck.
Cross the two ends behind your neck and bring them back to the front. Play with it until it looks just right!

Then you go from this...

To this! It's automatically an infinity scarf just by tucking the ends into the scarf. Easy peasy!

I paired this outfit with my Sperry Rain Boots. They're sparkly up top on that quilted pattern!
It was raining buckets today! But these don't leak at all :)

Well, y'all... my goodness! Let's take a deep breath. Cause I feel like that was a lot...

But it was fun, right?!

Let me know if you find any inspiration for you and your fam in the comments below! :)

Have a great week you guys!

Dealing With Grief

Just gonna warn y'all up front. This will be a tough post.

This is not going to be a light hearted post.

I am crying as I write this.

But I think it needs to be said.

I am learning how to grieve. Just like everyone else. Still learning everyday things that do and don't work for my healing process.

But before we start, let me tell you a little bit about life right now.

My family recently endured 2 serious losses. And by serious, I mean some of the worst losses that anyone can have.

It's hard to refer to them as losses really. Because honestly, they gained an eternity in Heaven. THANK YOU LORD

And more than that, I still feel them in my heart. I do. I really do.

I still feel my mom so close to me. And I think that's because of the soul ties that we have. I don't necessarily feel alone.

This is not denial. I know that she is not physically here, and I have come to accept that (it was a hard pill to swallow).

But when you have someone that you are so connected to, more so than you can even put into words, that connection does NOT just go away. Nor will it ever. I will love my mom everyday more than the day before.

I still pray for her and with her, and I will forever talk about her, and strive to be even half the mother that she was.

On October 6th, 2015, we had found out that my grandpa had passed. He was my last living grandparent, and while I wasn't necessarily so close to him, I had a lot of respect and love for him. He was hilarious, he loved his family with everything in him, and he was an exceptionally hard worker.

Even more than that, my mama and my grandpa had the kind of soul ties that her and I have.

We knew that this would come. He was getting older, and sicker. He was 85 years old and started to have strokes. He had never had a stroke in his life, but he had one about 2 weeks before he passed.

He was no longer able to eat with his own hands, and he was beginning to show a lot of those after signs of having a stroke.

Just saddening to see, and you really hope that they aren't in too much pain.

Well, he had another stroke about an hour before he passed, and due to the circumstances, we as a family really feel that he passed because he knew that it was his time.

So he passed.

On October 7th, 2015, just 20 hours later, my sweet mama passed.

I believe that they were so connected that they just did not want to live without the other. So they walked into the gates of heaven together, hand in hand.

My mama was also very sick. Sick in the way that you never want to see anyone sick. Especially the person that your soul is one with.

Let me tell you about the time leading up to one of the worst days of my life.

My mama was diagnosed with stage 3b breast cancer in May of 2008 (I believe. If I'm being honest, dates are pretty jumbled right now).

Just 2 weeks before getting diagnosed, she was awarded custody of my younger sister and I. She had just saved us from the worst, most abusive man I can think of. He caused so much turmoil, that the doctors said she had this cancer because of the stress he was causing her.

Wow. What a statement right? That's a lot in one. But my mama was the BEST woman ever. She never deserved this. Ever. But, as a single working mom of two young girls (I was 10 and my sister was 8),  she pushed through.

I'm not going to say it didn't come with it's scares. It did. She nearly died a couple times, including a scare with salmonella that landed her in the ICU. They said if she had gotten there even 10 minutes later, she would've died because her white blood cell count was so low.

We had almost no money (despite her having a wonderful job as a Registered Nurse, best nurse you'd ever met. She was made for that caring and brave profession).

But because of the AMAZING health care that we had through her work, she made it through. Countless chemo appointments, so much radiation, and a double mastectomy. Thank you Lord for giving me more time with my mama.

My younger sister, me and our precious mama.

A couple of years after being in remission, I believe it was the day after my 17th birthday. She told us that the cancer had returned. And this time it was in her head.

It had spread to a ton of other places, but the cancer spots in those areas were tiny compared to the golf ball sized one in her head.

It was sitting on top of the brain, and wasn't the type of cancer that would go into her brain. And PRAISE THE LORD FOR THAT

Slowly but surely, she would become more weak.

I would have to help her up off of the ground.

I would be giving her pain pills to just get by without enduring intense pain.

And I can tell you, that the day I moved away came in a close second to the day she passed in the amount of tears I cried.

I cried for days. I cried for weeks. I'd cry during class. I'd cry when I was falling asleep. I'd cry while I was in the shower, or in my dorm room alone. I'm not even a crier really. But I just could not help it. I knew it was coming.

We talked on the phone, texted, and FaceTimed everyday (at least 30 times a day). I cannot tell you the connection I have with her. I really can't. And I wish I could express that to you.

She came to visit me while my man and I lived in Hawai'i. And those were some AMAZING memories that we made while she could still move about and have fun without thinking about the inevitable everyday.

This may sound like a very negative post. But you have to understand. When you have been dealing with the horrific disease, and it is constantly pushed in your face every single day, it is very hard to not feel negatively about this disease.

Don't get me wrong. We had amazing times, where cancer never even came up. We made it a point to not let it run our lives. My mama was always so positive. Her quote was
"Worry does not empty tomorrow of it's sorrow. It empties today of it's strength".

We had that written in the spice cabinet of our home on a yellow post-it note. Looked at it every day.

One of the most special times we had was when we had a girls weekend, 2 weeks before she passed.

My older sister, my younger sister, my 2 nieces, and I went to my mama's house. It was just us girls. And let me tell you. I shed a lot of tears on that trip.

We walked into the house and my heart dropped. It had been the first time I'd seen her in person (not just on FaceTime everyday) and she could barely walk. She had oxygen on, and was struggling so much to keep the pain at bay.

But she was so happy seeing us. She smiled from ear to ear.

I slept in her bed every night. And we talked every night before going to bed.

One night we had a heart to heart, and just cried, hand in hand. We knew it was coming soon. And it was breaking both of our hearts.

I remember the day that I left so clearly. I obviously had to go back home sometime. I've learned that life won't stop for you even when you so badly need it to.

She was laying in bed, and I was going to drive myself to the airport because she felt too bad to get up. I couldn't help myself.

I said "well I think it's time to go now". But before I could even get all the words out, I was crying harder than I ever had. I flopped on the bed because I was unable to stand anymore. I cried for about 10 minutes without being able to move or speak. I was shaking. She just brushed through my hair with her fingers.

I had prayed for God not to let this be my last time to see her. I needed her. I needed my mama. I needed her to see my wedding and walk me down the aisle. I needed her to see me graduate from college. I needed her to be there with me when I was having babies. But, there's always one more thing you want them to be there for.

And she was in so much pain. I could see it. She tried so hard not to show it, but it was there. In full force and it wasn't releasing it's grip.

My brother came and visited her 2 days later and had some time with her.

All communication stopped with her. Not because she didn't want to, but because she was too weak to even lift her phone.

That killed me. Absolutely killed me. To go from having her as my life line and the one my soul loved so much, to having nothing of her, even though I knew she was still there!

But she could no longer speak at all. It was too tiring for her to open her mouth.

I saw her one last time on FaceTime. I told her I loved her so much.

A couple days later she passed.

That was 2 1/2 months ago.

And this Christmas will be the first one I will be spending without her here.

My younger sister, my older sister, me, my brother, and our mama.

I heard this quote the other day that really spoke to me.

I cry so much, and I have no motivation to even get out of bed some days, and I constantly am beating myself up for it. I wish I was more myself right now. But I am grieving.

That is absolutely so true. I cannot think of a better way to say it.

I believe that I will be grieving for the rest of my life. But I think that I will learn how to cope with it. I am in the very early stages of it right now.

But as God says,

A Time For Everything

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,
a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance...

I know I will find that balance of having a time for everything through God. He has never led me astray any other time. And he is always faithful. Always.

There will be many parts to this journey with grief. And I will be happy to be open and honest about them with you ladies.

And on that day when my strength is failing,
The end draws near and my time has come.
Still my soul will sing Your praise unending,
Ten thousand years and then forevermore.

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
O my soul.
